The Science Behind EconiClay's Patented Innovations

EconiClay is a modified clay material (MCM).  It is created with natural clay as the base material and bonded together using PHOMI's revolutionary, patented process and machinery. 


Natural clay is collected, sorted, and crushed into microscopic powder before it undergoes a spray-mixing process at low temperatures using specific surfactants to form active inorganic powder with a multi-layered network structure encapsulating an active surface coating.  This material is commonly known as “modified inorganic powder” or “modified clay material (MCM)”.  EconiClay is a patented material produced by PHOMI, and it is internationally recognized as ecological and environmentally friendly.  


EconiClay can hybridize with a wide range of polymer materials to create organic-inorganic hybrid ecological and environmental materials.  The material can then be shaped into various forms of composite materials such as thin sheet, board, or block through manipulation of heating curves and photochemical isomerism techniques.  Using this innovative and breakthrough process, inorganic clay is now able to cure un-fired into any shape and profile the same way as organic plastic.  The natural characteristics and composition of the clay has not changed because it was never treated at high temperature, therefore enabling EconiClay to remain biodegradable and recyclable.


EconiClay products are both durable and malleable, making its look and feel highly realistic when 3D printing technology is utilized to mold the panels into various shapes and forms.

1. Cost Savings and Ease of Installation

  • Thin and Light - With a thickness range of  2-4 mm and weighing just 3-6 kg/㎡.  EconiClay panels can be easily handled with minimal labor and securely affixed with minimal adhesive.  This translates into great savings on installation and transportation costs.
  • Flexible and Curvable -  EconiClay can withstand lateral pulls and cracking forces, therefore enabling easy application over joints between separate panels or wrap-over round columns.


2. Fire and Weather Resistant

  • Class A Fireproof - EconiClay is compliant with A1 Class Fireproof standard.
  • UV Resistant - Using 1500h UV test, EconiClay showed a grey scale rating of 4-5 and a Delta E rating of 1.8.
  • Freeze-Thaw Resistant - EconiClay showed no appearance of surface powderising, cracks or scaling after more than 100 freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Water, Acid and Alkaline Resistant - EconiClay is not deformed or damaged when immersed in water, acid or alkali solutions.
  • Odorless and Moisture Resistant - With its mould-resistant, damp-resistance & moisture absorbing characteristics, EconiClay is a great option for high humidity climates.

  • Durable - EconiClay can withstand 4000h aging accelerated test that is equivalent to outdoor life expectancy of 50 years.
  • Scrub Resistant - EconiClay displayed no substrate exposure after 4000 cycles
  • Self-Cleaning and Stain-Resistant - With its neutral properties, dust and stain do not cling onto EconiClay surface and can easily be washed down with rain or water spray.


4. Promotes Health and Sustainability

  • Non-Toxic - No harmful chemicals or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ever used in the production of EconiClay products.  The clay’s natural colors are used whenever possible.  EconiClay is 100% biodegradable and recyclable.
  • Antiviral - Tested to ISO 21702 standard, EconiClay demonstrated an R-value of 2.16 after 12 hours, indicating a 99% reduction in viral activity and confirming EconiClay's efficacy in reducing surface-borne viruses.
  • Low Thermoplasticity and Near-Zero Carbon Emission - EconiClay raw material does not require high heat to softwen or reshape.  It undergoes low-temperature modification using surfanctants, avoiding energy-intensive melting or firing processes.  This results in up to 80% lower carbon footprint compared to conventional material.  Greenhouse gas emission in the life cycle of 1 kg of EconiClay product (from cradle to grave) is 0.26 kgCO2e.
  • Sustainable and Recyclable - EconiClay does not rely on thermoplasticity, therefore it can be recycled and reused infinitely without degrading its structure.  EconiClay can be recycled and reused, or revert back to ordinary clay.
  • Breathable - EconiClay acts as a skin layer for building surfaces.  It keeps out water but still allows the building to breath freely, thereby achieving an ecological and healthier living environment.
